If you could tell your younger self starting out on the journey of learning about your child’s speech-language needs, what would you say?
I would tell myself to ask more questions. Don’t follow the first advice you get blindly. We assume that people know what they are talking about, but if it doesn’t make sense ask for clarification. I would tell myself to be patient and remember that this is so hard, oh his little mind. All behavior is communication. He is not misbehaving, he is communicating.

If you could tell your younger self starting out on the journey of learning about your child’s speech-language needs, what would you say?
Trust your intuition…his doctor said “boys just start talking later than girls.” You are your child’s advocate, you may not have all the knowledge or experience but you know your child better than the professionals do, so it is important to work hand in hand with them. Early intervention was the best thing we could have done, but you have to be patient, persistent and trust the process.

If you could tell your younger self starting out on the journey of learning about your child’s learning and social needs, what would you say?
That you must be proactive and hands-on in acquiring the help and
services your child needs. You know them better than anyone. You must be their advocate because they may not be able to advocate for themselves.
